Atalanta Stun Liverpool in Europa League Quarterfinal
Liverpool's Europa League Hopes In Tatters After Atalanta Defeat
Atalanta recorded a famous 3-0 victory in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League quarter-final against Liverpool on Thursday night.
The Italian side were in impressive form throughout the match and fully deserved their victory. Liverpool, meanwhile, were well below their best and were unable to create many clear-cut chances.
The result leaves Liverpool with a mountain to climb in the second leg next week. They will need to win by at least four goals to progress to the semi-finals.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was left to rue his team's performance after the match.
"We were not good enough tonight," he said. "We didn't create enough chances and we made too many mistakes. We need to be much better in the second leg."
Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini was delighted with his team's performance.
"We played a great match," he said. "We were very disciplined and we took our chances. We are now in a great position to reach the semi-finals."
The second leg of the quarterfinal will be played at Anfield on April 14th.
Other Europa League Quarterfinal Results
